UMD: A Globally Connected University

Mary-Elizabeth Woolsey

Program: Freshmen Abroad: Destination London
Term: Fall 2014

Studying abroad in London for my first semester was an amazing experience. I gained many new skills that I don't believe I otherwise would've been able to gain. I was extremely independent and learned how to take care of myself while immersing myself in a new culture as well as staying on track with my studies.

Advice for future #TerpsAbroad: As a woman I would advise other young women to be careful when going abroad, but to not be scared. It is important to take precautions when traveling as a young woman but as long as you're smart and careful, do not let anything hold you back from experiencing everything you want to experience.

My most memorable experience while abroad was participating in the HostUK program. I took a quick survey and was placed with a family in a rural area of England, Cornwall. My host family was amazing, they took great care of me and showed me a whole new way of life.

Advice for future #TerpsAbroad: I want people to know that studying abroad is not a scary thing. It is fun and exciting and one of the best opportunities we have as college students. It was definitely the best experience of my life to date and I would never want fear to hold any other student back from having a similar experience.
