Chinese Language Classes for Children and Youth

 

The Confucius Institute offers Chinese language classes for younger learners based on their age AND the amount of language they may already have.

Available Classes:

Dates:  “Semesters” are roughly based on the UMD’s academic calendar. Classes are once a week on Sundays, for 4 to 14 weeks.*

Times:  Sundays, 10–11 a.m., or 11 a.m.–noon, depending on numbers of children per class and per level (No class on holidays, such as Easter and Christmas.)*

Target maximum: 10-12 students per class

Fees:  $10 per hour of instruction for the younger children. $15 for 1½ hour classes for older youth. (Checks or money orders payable to the University of Maryland. No cash, please.)

Teachers: Our teachers are native Chinese speakers, with on-going training in elementary education. Some are teaching interns with CIM.

Course descriptions:

  • Play and Learn Chinese
    Preliterate through kindergarten-aged children (ages pre-K to 6 years)
    This course is designed both as a review for children who have previously attended the CIM children’s class, and children who are new to the Chinese language. No prior Chinese language experience is required. The children will learn Chinese through games, activities, and songs. Students will become familiar with simple words and phrases. Parent participation is expected.  Topics include:
    • Greetings,
    • Family members,
    • Numbers,
    • Colors,
    • Parts of the body, and
    • Food and drinks.
  • Introduction to Chinese for Early Elementary Students
    Children with some literacy (ages 6 to 9 years)
    Designed for children who have little or no previous Chinese language knowledge, or have had some and need to practice. Parent participation is not required but is encouraged. The children will:
    • Learn or review speaking Chinese,
    • Reading Chinese,
    • Writing Chinese,
    • Be introduced to pinyin (the romanized alphabet used to help pronounce Chinese),
    • Learn Chinese characters, and
    • Learn to comfortably speak key words and phrases.
  • Introduction to Chinese for Elementary/Middle School Students
    Literate children with some or little Chinese (ages 10 and older)
    Designed for slightly older children with little or no Chinese language knowledge, or who have had some and need to practice. Parent participation is not required but is encouraged. Depending on parent interest, this class can become 1½ hours, with a fee of $15. Students will:
    • Learn or review speaking Chinese,
    • Reading Chinese,
    • Writing Chinese,
    • Be introduced to pinyin (the romanized alphabet used to help pronounce Chinese), and
    • Learn to use Chinese characters and speak key words and phrases.
