UMD: A Globally Connected University

Academic Calendar and Class Registration

The University of Maryland has two regular semesters a year. The Fall semester is from late August to mid-December, and the Spring semester runs from the end of January to mid-May. There are two Summer terms that are about six weeks each, as well as a Winter term that is about three weeks long. F-1 and J-1 students are required to register full time for Spring and Fall semesters, unless they have been pre-approved for part-time authorization. You may register for classes, find the University of Maryland's academic calendar, course descriptions, and a schedule of classes at Testudo.

Payment of Tuition and Fees

All University of Maryland bills are due in full by posted deadlines unless you have signed up for a payment plan. You may find information about tuition, fees and billing at the Office of the Bursar. There are many different payment methods, including check, money order, credit card, and a payment plan.

Tuition Remission

If you are a graduate student and have an assistantship, you might have some or all of your tuition paid for through the Tuition Remission Program. If you have an assistantship, please contact your department for information.

Full-Time Status

F-1 and J-1 students must be registered full-time for the Fall and Spring semesters.

Courses taken for AUDIT do NOT generate credits (or graduate units) and CANNOT be used in calculating full-time status. Students who are unable to enroll full-time because of an extraordinary health or academic reason must obtain approval from an international student advisor BEFORE dropping or withdrawing from a course. The deadline to obtain approval from an ISSS advisor is the last day of the schedule adjustment (Drop/Add) period.  F-1 and J-1 student regulations do not require students to be enrolled during their annual vacations (summer and winter) unless it is their final term.

Undergraduate Students

Undergraduate students must register for and complete a minimum of 12 credit hours each semester to maintain their F-1 or J-1 status. Students taking MEI 005 will need to register for an additional 6 credit hours. Undergraduate students do not have to be enrolled full-time if they have less than 12 credits remaining in their final term of study, BUT they must be approved for this part-time enrollment before the end of the drop/add period of their final term. Please see an ISSS advisor to obtain this clearance.

Graduate Students

Graduate students must register for and complete a minimum of 48 graduate units each semester to maintain their F-1 or J-1 status. There are two exceptions to this rule:

  1. Graduate students do not have to be enrolled full-time during their last term of study if they have less than 48 units remaining in their program, BUT they must obtain approval for this part-time enrollment before the end of the drop/add period of their final semester. Please see an ISSS advisor about this clearance.
  2. Continuous registration is required of all doctoral students until they complete their degree requirements. Graduate School policy states that once doctoral students have advanced to candidacy they must register for Doctoral Dissertation research (899) every semester. 899 will carry 6 credit hours (108 units) and be covered by the flat candidacy tuition. Candidates will automatically be registered for 6 credits of 899 each semester, regardless of how many credits of 899 they already have.

Course number Graduate units per credit hour
000 - 399:   2 units per credit hour
400 - 499:   4 units
