J-1 Intern Application Process

Step I

Intern contacts department with a request to participate in an internship at the University of Maryland College Park

Action: The intern completes and submits an Application Form along with the required supporting documents to the department supervisor and ARS point person

  • Proof of English language proficiency
    • English language test - TOEFL with a minimum score of 80
    • English language test - IELTS with a minimum score of 5.5
    • English Proficiency Interview with hosting department
  • A copy of the intern's transcripts
  • Resume or CV
  • A signed copy of the Home Institution Certification
  • Statement of purpose or letter of intent
  • Letters of recommendation (if required by host department)

Step II

Supervisor reviews the application and supporting documentation. If the supervisor accepts the student for an internship program, the department proceeds with the J-1 intern process.

Step III

The intern completes the J-1 Data Collection Form and submits the following to the department

  • Proof of English proficiency
  • Provides proof of funding, if not provided by the University of Maryland department
    • Minimum funding of $1,000 per month
    • Letter from outside sponsoring agency
    • A personal bank statement
    • Letter from the intern's or family member's bank stating the amount of available liquid funds (credit card limits, stocks, bonds are not acceptable forms of funding). If sponsored by family member attach a letter of sponsorship.
  • Signed Intern Attestation Form

Step IV

Once the department has completed the application/screening process and has accepted the student into their student internship program, the department may forward the following documentation to ISSS.

J-1 Intern/Trainee Application Packet

  • Application
  • Home institution certification
  • Transcripts
  • Resume or CV
  • Statement of purpose or letter of intent
  • Letters of recommendation (if required by host department)
  • Proof of English Proficiency- please submit one of the following documents
    • English language test - TOEFL with a minimum score of 80
    • English language test - IELTS with a minimum score of 5.5
    • English Proficiency Interview with hosting department
  • Responsibilities of a J-1 Intern/Trainee Sponsoring Department/Professor - signed
  • Intern Attestation - signed
  • Training /Internship Placement Plan for DS-7002 - original signed by intern/trainee and signed in blue ink by supervisor
  • Proof of funding, if not provided by the University of Maryland department
    • Minimum funding of $1,000 per month
    • Letter from outside sponsoring agency
    • A personal bank statement
    • Letter from the intern's bank stating the amount of available liquid funds (credit card limits, stocks, bonds are not acceptable forms of funding)

Step V

ISSS reviews the application packet for eligibility requirements and reviews the T/IPP. ISSS requires two weeks processing time.

If the packet is complete and the eligibility requirements are met, ISSS prepares the J-1 DS-2019 and signs the T/IPP. ISSS will contact the department once the J-1 DS-2019 and the pre-arrival packet are complete. The Department will pick up the packet and send it to the intern overseas.

Step VI

The intern will receive the J-1 DS-2019 and apply for a J-1 visa at the US embassy/consulate

  • The intern will review the J-1 DS-2019 for errors
  • The intern will pay the SEVIS fee of $180.00 online, at least five days before the date of the visa interview
  • The intern will complete the DS-160 visa application form and schedule a visa interview at the US Embassy/Consulate
  • The US Embassy/Consulate process the J-1 visa stamp in passport
  • The intern will select health insurance that meets J-1 health insurance requirements
