Federal Income Tax Deadline: April 18, 2017

Tax season has arrived again!  ISSS has compiled a list of resources that will be available to our international students and scholars during this period.  The deadline for filing Federal Income Tax forms is April 18, 2017 for income earned in 2016.

    View your 1098-T and other tax information.
  • Community Tax Assistance
    Community Tax Aid, Inc. is a group of volunteers from all aspects of accounting-public, industry, government, non-profit, and education--the legal community, accounting and law students and others. CTA provides income tax preparation services for persons with low incomes (<$22,000) and the elderly at no charge. Volunteers also represent clients if necessary.
  • Duplicate W-2 Request
    If you worked on campus, you may request a duplicate form W-2 from the State of Maryland.  You can download your W-2 online by visiting the POSC website link above and following the instructions to create an account.  You may also call 410-260-7964 or 1-888-674-0019 to speak to a live person for assistance in obtaining a W-2 to be mailed to your address.
  • Federal Taxation for NonResident Aliens
  • Form 8843 (pdf)
    Whether or not there was earned income, all non-residents, including dependents in the U.S., must file form 8843.  Form 8843 instructions (pdf).
  • GLACIER TAX PREP SERVICE
    GLACIER Tax Prep is a tax return preparation software program designed primarily for nonresident alien students, scholars, trainees, researchers, and other educational immigration statuses to prepare their U.S. federal income tax return Form 1040NR or Form 1040NR-EZ. Use is free of charge, but is limited to people employed with the University of Maryland College Park.
    To access GLACIER Tax Prep:
    1. Visit www.gradschool.umd.edu
    2. Under the “Students” menu, click “International Students” and then select the “Glacier Tax Prep” link.
    3. When prompted, enter your UID and password
    4. Follow instructions on GLACIER Tax Prep website

  • Maryland Free Income Tax Preparation
    The Maryland Taxpayer Service Offices provide free Maryland income tax assistance in person or over the phone.  There are 11 offices available.

  • U.S. Internal Revenue Service:  IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers
    IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers are your source for personal tax help when you believe your tax issue cannot be handled online or by phone, and you want face-to-face assistance.  There are eight IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers in the state of Maryland.
