Transfer (J-1 Scholars)

If you are an international scholar, who is affiliated with another school and has been invited to the University of Maryland for teaching or research as a J-1 Exchange Visitor, you will find below the necessary steps to transfer your J-1 sponsorship from your current school to UMD.

The total stay in the United States for Exchange Visitors in the following categories is limited. Extensions beyond that time are not permitted.

Category - Maximum Stay

  • Visiting Professor or Research Scholar - 5 years
  • Short-term scholars - 6 months
  • Specialists - 12 months
  • J-1 Intern  - 12 months

Procedures

  1. The UMD host department will submit a J-1 request to ISSS. 
  2. ISSS will review the request for eligibility for transfer
  3. Once UMD and ISSS have approved your position and determined your eligibility, please inform the international office at your current institution and initiate a transfer to UMD
  4. Your current J-1 sponsor must approve your "release" in the SEVIS system to the University of Maryland before we can access your SEVIS record and issue you a DS-2019
  5. UMD will collect your address and phone and confirm your arrival to UMD before completing the transfer in SEVIS and issuing the DS-2019.  You must be in the U.S. at the time of the transfer.
     

If you are an international scholar, who is affiliated with UMCP and has been invited to another school for teaching or research as a J-1 Exchange Visitor, you will find below the necessary steps to transfer your J-1 sponsorship from UMCP to that school.

Note: If you hold J-1 documents from an agency, such as USAID, these instructions do not apply to you, and you should consult that agency directly.

Procedures

  1. Contact and meet with your UMCP Department Principal Investigator or Supervisor to discuss your transfer out of UMCP.
  2. The business office contact for your UMCP Department will contact OIS to inform us that you will be completing your J-1 program and requesting a transfer.
  3. Complete the J-1 Early Termination Form in iTerp.
  4. Contact the J-1 Responsible Officer at the new institution to request instructions on the procedure to transfer into the new university.
    • Obtain the program number of the institution
    • Confirm the contact information for J-1 Responsible Officer at new university
    • Discuss a release date.
  5. With the information listed above, ISSS will process your transfer on the release date.
