Prof. Betancourt has been an Associate Member of the Center for International Economics since 1999. He was an IRIS Fellow (1992 - 1995). Since 1998 he is a member of the IRIS Center Academic Council. He has been a Visiting Professor on several occasions at INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France, and he held the Kermit O. Hanson Visiting Chair at the University of Washington Graduate School of Business in 1996. He was one of the founders and first President of the Association for the Study of the Cuban Economy (1990 - 1992).
He was a member of the Census Advisory Board on behalf of the AEA (1997-1999; 2000-2002) and was Co- Chair for the 2001-2002 period. He is the recipient of two Fulbright Senior Specialist Awards: 2003 for Chile, where he gave a series of lectures at the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences of the University of Chile; and 2005 for Spain, where he gave a series of lectures at the Universidad Publica de Navarra in Pamplona and at the Univesidad de Zaragoza. In 2004 Professor Betancourt became Affiliated Faculty, Marketing Department, R.H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland.
Applied microeconomics and economic development. His main consultancies include international organizations as well as business firms. He is an expert on Cuba's Economy.
