The author of Cannibal Democracy: Race and Representation in the Literature of the Americas (Minnesota UP, 2008), Professor Nunes has also published journal and book articles, as well as reviews. Her current monograph project examines the intersection of the international peace movement at the beginning of the 20th century and anti-racism movements of the same period through the biography of James Bertram Clarke, who addressed these issues in pseudonymous work written and published in five languages. She is also working on a reevaluation of the Third Pan-African Congress (1923) from the perspective of extensive journalistic commentary in black student newspapers in Portugal, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, as well as a number of African countries.

Professor Nunes lectures widely and teaches internationally, most recently at the University of Vienna, Austria and the Federal University of Bahia, Salvador, Brazil. She has received numerous grants and fellowships, including Fulbrights to Brazil and Mozambique.  During the 2012-2013 academic year, she was a fellow in the ADVANCE Leadership Program and served as research mentor in the summer 2013 McNair Program.
