American University in Bosnia and Herzegovina (AUBiH) is a multi-ethnic, career-oriented university and it is the only one to work in the entire territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Classes at the AUBiH are based on the American liberal education with undergraduate, graduate and doctoral studies, which are in line with the Bologna principles. AUBiH was established in partnership with the State University of New York Canton (SUNY) and it offers specialized programs located in Sarajevo, and elsewhere in the country. AUBiH is based on American educational system, and curricula and rules of study are consistent with SUNY. In accordance with the mission of the University, the goal is to provide quality university education, for students throughout the region, that follows the world trends in specialized areas of economics, public relations, technology and art and science.

AUBIH students have the expected teacher-student ratio of 1:12 and a dynamic, intelligent and motivated environment that emphasizes critical thinking and creative problem solving in an atmosphere of diversity and tolerance.

AUBiH is located in Sarajeveo, the multiethnic capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina with a long, tumultuous and colorful history. Site of the assassination in 1914 that sparked World War I, the city played host to the 1984 Winter Olympics, and was besieged during in early 1990s by conflicting ethnic forces. Building on its varied history, muliethnic and religious traditions of Muslim and Christian, Bosnian, Croat and Serb, Sarajevo is a dynamic regional center that embraces both its rich past and promising future.


To apply to this program, you must complete two main steps:

  1. Submit a UMD approval application - start by clicking “apply now” at the top of this page. This application allows UMD Education Abroad to approve your study abroad program selection so you may earn credit in a program outside of UMD.
    This application will require you to meet with your EA advisor, who will communicate important details related to participating in this program. If you do not complete this application by the stated deadline, you may not receive credit for your study abroad program and will lose your student status for the time you are not studying at UMD.
  2. Apply directly to the program provider. After receiving UMD approval, you should submit the program application directly to the program sponsor by their deadline. Your program sponsor will determine your official acceptance to a program. You must adhere to the provider's timeline, eligibility standards, and application requirements.

After being accepted to your program, your EA advisor will guide you through the course pre-approval process where you will determine which credits you will fulfill abroad.
