Statement from ISSS on the U.S. Government's D/S Proposal
The Office of International Students and Scholar Services is carefully monitoring the proposed changes in Establishing a Fixed Time Period of Admission and an Extension of Stay Procedure for Nonimmigrant Academic Students, Exchange Visitors, and Representatives of Foreign Information Media published in the Federal Register on Friday, Sept. 25, 2020. These proposed modifications would have a serious and far-reaching impact on the period of admission and extension of stay procedures for our F-1 and J-1 students and scholars and their dependents. We recognize that the uncertainty of the rule change on your life is stressful and we will be providing further information as it is available.
This publication is a draft of a potential final rule change. In an effort to make sure that we are aware of our community’s concerns, we are collecting comments on the personal impact of this change. Please limit your comments to 500 characters and please submit them here by Oct. 11, 2020.
In our continued advocacy for international members of our community, we will submit comments to this proposed rule-making. We will also work with our educational, governmental and professional association partners in our advocacy efforts. For more information and analysis, we invite you to read more on this topic from the NAFSA Association of International Educators.
