UMD Students Make Impact at Shanghai Food Safety Conference
Three UMD students and a faculty mentor were among sixty-four representatives from 18 member institutions who participated in this summer's Universitas 21 Undergraduate Research Conference, hosted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University at SJTU's Xuhui and Minhang campuses. The theme of ‘food safety: from farm to table’ evoked lively discussion, excellent presentations and interesting poster sessions. Junior Erin McCaffrey (Microbiology;Global Poverty minor, Gemstone Honors program) was the winner of a best oral presentation award, along with colleagues from the University of Queensland and the University of New South Wales, Australia. Also participating from UMD were Ryan Belcher ('15, Government and Politics/Society and Environmental Issues, and Honors Program), and Brooks Leitner ('15, Kinesiology). Professor Thomas W. Castongua (Nutrition and Food Science, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources) completed the UMD delegation. Plans are already underway for the 2015 U21 URC, which will be hosted by the University of Auckland, New Zealand under the theme ‘Peoples and Places’ www.universitas21.com/link/SE.
