Getting to Campus

Welcome to the University of Maryland!

You will be responsible for arranging your transportation to campus. There are three major airports located in the Washington D.C. Metro area with different alternative transportation options for getting to and from University of Maryland:

BWI  - Baltimore-Washington International Airport

DCA - Ronald Reagan National Airport

IAD – Washington Dulles Airport

BWI - Baltimore-Washington International Airport
Located in Maryland, this is the closest airport to College Park, and many airlines fly in and out of BWI daily.

Getting from BWI to College Park, you can use following options:

  • MARC Train
  • BWI Metrobus
  • Airport Shuttles
  • BWI Airport Taxi/Uber/Lyft
  • Rental Car Services (should we mention this?)

MARC (Penn Line)- an easy and efficient way to travel between Baltimore and College Park.

  • Trains depart from BWI and arriving at Union Station in Washington, DC.
  • Total length of the journey from BWI to Union Station is approximately 35 minutes.
  • There is service on both the weekdays and weekends.
  • Weekday trains run very frequently to accommodate large number of commuters. The first train departs from BWI at 4:40 am and continues to run every 20 minutes during rush hours and then every hour during the rest of the day until 9:30 pm.
  • Saturday trains run between 9am-10pm and depart every hour during rush hour and every few hours throughout midday. On Sundays, it is less frequent with only 6 departures from BWI throughout the day.
  • One way fares cost $7 and can be purchased from Amtrak Quick-Trak ticket vending machines or the ticket office. Passengers many also purchase tickets on the train with $5 surcharge added to the ticket price.
  • Once arrived at Union Station, get on the metro (Red Line) bound for Shady Grove, get off at Gallery Place Metro Station (2 stops) and transfer to Green or Yellow Line bound for Greenbelt. ($3.20 one way – prices may change)

BWI Metro Bus- Operates between Greenbelt (the metro stop the furthest north on the Green/Yellow line) and BWI Airport

  • Depart Every 70 minutes from 6am-9pm on weekdays (No weekend services)
  • Get on the metro (subway) bound for Branch Ave and get off at College Park Metro Station which is only one stop away.
  • From there you can take a taxi or Shuttle-UM (#104) to get to campus. https://transportation.umd.edu/shuttle-um/104/387

Airport Shuttles- Offers 24/7 airport pick up and drop off with private cars and shared vans.

  • Two most popular shuttles are Go Airport Shuttle (goairportshuttle.com) or SuperShuttle (supershuttle.com)
  • Rates vary depending on your destination and type of service, from $37 per person to $125.
  • Travel time varies depending on traffic and how many other you are sharing a van with.

Airport Taxi/Uber/Lyft- Available 24/7 and are located just outside baggage claim.

  • The estimated cost for airport taxi for a trip to College Park is around $80 and can vary depending on traffic.
  • Uber/Lyft usually cost between $40-$55 but the price can increase during rush hour.

 

DCA-Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport

Also known as Reagan National or just National, this airport is very close to downtown DC and is the only airport located on the Metrorail system. It is in Virginia, on the blue and yellow lines, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport stop.

Getting from National to College Park:

Metro

  • Take the Yellow Metrorail line in the direction of Greenbelt and get off at College Park-U of MD (15 stops/ $3.85 one way)
  • The length of the journey from DCA to College Park Metro station is approximately 50 minutes.

Airport Taxi/Uber/Lyft- Available 24/7 and are located just outside baggage claim.

  • The estimated cost for airport taxi for a trip to College Park is around $45-70 and can vary depending on traffic.
  • Uber/Lyft usually cost between $35-$50 but the price can increase during rush hour.

IAD – Washington Dulles International Airport

Located in Dulles, Virginia, Dulles Airport (or just Dulles) is about 26 miles from downtown DC.

Getting from Dulles to College Park:

Silver Line Express Bus + Metro

  • Silver Line Express bus connects Dulles Airport to Wiehle-Reston East Metro Station on the Silver Line. ($5 each way/ cash or credit card only)
  • Board at the Airport after purchasing tickets at the counter located inside Arrival Door 4 in the Terminal.
  • Bus departs every 15-20 minutes Monday-Friday, Every 20 minutes on weekends. For more information- https://www.flydulles.com/iad/silver-line-express-bus-metrorail-station
  • The bus will take you to the Wiehle-Reston East Metro station, on the silver line. Take the train in the direction of Largo Town Center. Transfer at L’Enfant Plaza to the green line or yellow line in the direction of Greenbelt and get off at College Park-U of MD. 
  • The length of the journey from Dulles to College Park Metro station is approximately 90-100 minutes.

Washington Flyer Taxicabs- Offers 24/7 airport pick up and drop off, no reservations necessary.

  • Follow the signs for Ground Transportation or Taxi to the lower level of the Terminal, DOWN the ramp to Door 2 or Door 6. A customer service representative is available 24-hours a day.
  • Your trips to and from Dulles Airport might be impacted by tolls on nearby roads.  The website www.66expresslanes.org provides information concerning rush hour tolls on nearby Virginia Route 66.   
  • Cash or credit card: American Express, Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and Diners Club are accepted by all cabs
