Supporting Late Arrivals

The following information will help faculty and staff in supporting F-1 and J-1 graduate students who are arriving late at the beginning of a semester. Please keep in mind that if a student will not be able to arrive on campus prior to drop/add and no prior arrangements were discussed, student should request deferral to a new semester. 

 

Master’s Students

  • Student should contact department and obtain a letter supporting their late arrival
  • Student must inform ISSS about late arrival and submit copy of department letter at which time I-20 state date could be changed
  • Student must be registered and attending classes by the last day of drop/add
  • Student must report to ISSS and complete documents check for SEVIS record activation upon arrival

PhD Student

  • Student should contact department and obtain a letter supporting late arrival
  • Student must inform ISSS about late arrival and submit a copy of department letter at which time I-20 start date could be changed
  • Student must discuss course registration with advisor prior to arrival- arrival should be by last day of drop/add unless previous arrangements have been made with department
  • Student must report to ISSS and complete documents check for SEVIS record activation upon arrival

MS/PhD Bridge Students

  • Student must contact department and obtain a letter supporting late arrival
  • Student must contact MEI and obtain a letter supporting late arrival
  • Student must inform ISSS about late arrival and submit a copy of the letters at which time I-20 start date could be changed
  • Student must discuss registration with department (up to 2 courses + Bridge)
  • Student must be registered and attending classes by the last day of drop/add
  • Student must report to ISSS and complete documents check for SEVIS record activation upon arrival

MS/PhD Intensive Students

  • Student must contact department and obtain a letter supporting late arrival
  • Student must contact MEI and obtain a letter supporting late arrival
  • Student must inform ISSS about late arrival and submit a copy of the letters at which time I-20 start date could be changed
  • Student cannot miss more than 45 hours of class- if so automatic failure of UMEI 005
  • Student must report to ISSS and complete documents check for SEVIS record activation upon arrival
