New International Student Checklist

  1. Immigration -- Get ready to come to the United States.
    (If you are currently in the US in F-1 or J-1 status, please make sure you submitted your Transfer In Form and skip to step 2)
     
  2. Pay the SEVIS Fee (Form I-901) and print a receipt
    Apply for your visa
    When you enter the US, make sure the entry stamp in your passport is annotated with F-1
          or J-1 and D/S
            • If it is not, print your I-94
  3. Things to complete now.

    Set up your Directory ID
    Build your Orientation Schedule
            •  Register for an ISSS Immigration Session (mandatory)
            •  Register for UMD New Student Orientation (Undergraduate students only)
               — New students should register for the session on January 21
               — Students transferring from a US University can attend any transfer orientation
            •  Register for Orientation Week Events
            •   Don't forget to save room for your department events
    Meet with your doctor to complete your Immunization Record Form
    Purchase U.S. Health Insurance
    Read our Tip of the Week (Emails ISSS sends before orientation)
    Visit the ISSS International Arrival Guide to learn about:
            •  Housing
            •  Bank accounts
            •  Health care
            •  Shopping
            •  Transportation
            •  And more...

  4. Things to do when you arrive at UMD.
    (** Required to activate your SEVIS record)

    Complete your Documents Check**
    Complete your SEVIS verification**
    Attend an ISSS Immigration Session**
    Attend UMD New Student Orientation (Undergraduate students only)
    Meet with your academic advisor to register for classes
          (Graduate and Exchange students only)
    Participate in International Orientation Week
    Get your UMD Student ID Card
    Submit your Immunization Record Form
    Report any change of address within 10 days through our SEVIS verification process
