TRANSFER IN

If you are an international scholar, who is affiliated with another school and has been invited to the University of Maryland College Park (UMCP) for teaching or research as a J-1 Exchange Visitor, you will find below the necessary steps to transfer your J-1 sponsorship from your current school to UMCP.

Note: If you hold J-1 documents from an agency, such as USAID, these instructions do not apply to you, and you should consult that agency directly.

The total stay in the United States for Exchange Visitors in the "Professor and Research Scholar" categories is limited to Five years. Extensions beyond that time are not permitted on University of Maryland College Park sponsored programs.

Procedures

  1. Contact your J-1 Responsible Officer at your current university and ask that they initiate a transfer to UMCP.
  2. Provide all previous and current copies of your DS-2019 form.
  3. Your current J-1 sponsor must approve your "release" in the SEVIS system to the University of Maryland before we can access your SEVIS record and issue you a DS-2019 form.
  4. After you have secured your release from your current J-1 sponsor, arrange your departure from that university.
  5. Upon your arrival to UMCP, please report to ISSS to complete the transfer procedure and receive the new DS-2019 form.
  6. All new and returning visiting researchers, professors and short- term scholars are required to attend an orientation, which is held every Thursday at 10 AM at International Student & Scholar Services, 1126 H.J. Patterson Hall. ISSS must report your presence on campus within 30 days of the beginning of your program so please attend the orientation within the first 2 weeks of your arrival.

TRANSFER OUT

If you are an international scholar, who is affiliated with UMCP and has been invited to another school for teaching or research as a J-1 Exchange Visitor, you will find below the necessary steps to transfer your J-1 sponsorship from UMCP to that school.

Procedures

  1. Contact and meet with your UMCP Department Principal Investigator or Supervisor to discuss your transfer out of UMCP.
  2. The business office contact for your UMCP Department will contact OIS to inform us that you will be completing your J-1 program and requesting a transfer.
  3. Complete the J-1 Early Termination Form.
  4. Contact the J-1 Responsible Officer at the new institution to request instructions on the procedure to transfer into the new university.
    • Obtain the program number of the institution
    • Confirm the contact information for J-1 Responsible Officer at new university
    • Discuss a release date.
  5. With the information listed above, ISSS will process your transfer on the release date.
