The Office of International Affairs (OIA) is looking for a UMD student to serve as a Graphic
Design/Digital Content Assistant on our Communications Team! The Office of International
Affairs (OIA) is an office on campus that works to create and sustain opportunities across
the University of Maryland that address global challenges, foster inclusivity, and bring out
the best in humanity. Encompassing International Student & Scholar Services, Education
Abroad and the office of Global Learning Initiatives, OIA works to support international
research collaborations, create project-based global learning opportunities, reimagine
global engagement for the virtual space, and develop innovative programming for faculty
and students.
This is a great opportunity for students who want to work as part of a collaborative team in
a cross-cutting unit that connects the university’s many cultures, global initiatives and
educational resources while developing their graphic design, communications and
marketing skills.
The Graphic Design/Digital Content Assistant will support OIA’s Communications Team by
developing visually engaging designs and templates for both digital and print products that
showcase global learning at UMD. This position will work collaboratively with the team to
ensure consistency in design, branding, and messaging across OIA content and will play an
important role in projects aimed at building a repository of visual resources, toolkits and
templates for use by OIA staff.
We are looking for a team-player and organized self-starter who can provide creative
insights into OIA’s communication and brand strategies. Undergraduate students who want
to get more involved with UMD’s community of international and globally-minded students,
scholars, faculty and staff, and those with experience in graphic design, photography,
communications and marketing, digital content strategy or relevant experience are
encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities
● Design graphics and content for social media, newsletters, flyers, and digital screens
that promote events, programs and services offered by OIA and its units
● Design print material for program and event promotions and publications as
needed
● Design branded giveaway items for OIA and its units
● Update OIA branding guidelines, branded toolkits and templates for use across OIA
● Establish a repository of photos and videos for OIA use
● Assist with the website redesign project
● Adhere to OIA brand standards and meet project deadlines
● Other marketing and communications support as tasks arise
Qualifications
● Undergraduate student at University of Maryland
● Good academic standing and maintenance of a minimum 2.5 GPA
● Strong skills in graphic design (Canva, Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and/or
Photoshop)
● Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
● Excellent written and verbal communications skills, knowledge of AP style a plus
● Creative thinker and problem solver
● Ability to take initiative on projects and work independently
● A strong communicator, comfortable giving and receiving feedback
● Experience in photography, photo editing and digital asset management is a plus
● Experience in video production or editing is a plus
● Experience with social media management a plus
● Strong project management skills and ability to work in fast-paced environment
● Passion for cross-cultural collaboration and global learning
