Position: Communications Assistant, Office of International Affairs

Position Type: Flexible/Part time, approximately 10 – 15 hours a week

Positions Available: 3

Semester: Fall 2021, with potential to go into Spring 2022

Compensation: $15/hour

Department/Office: Office of International Affairs

The Office of International Affairs (OIA) is looking for up to three UMD students to serve as Communications Assistants on our team! The Office of International Affairs (OIA) is an office on campus that works to create and sustain opportunities across the University of Maryland that address global challenges, foster inclusivity, and bring out the best in humanity. Encompassing International Student & Scholar Services, Education Abroad, the Office of China Affairs and International Risk Management, OIA works to support international research collaborations, create project-based global learning opportunities, reimagine global engagement for the virtual space, and develop innovative programming for faculty and students. 

This is a great opportunity for students who want to work as part of a collaborative team in a cross-cutting unit that connects the university’s many cultures, global initiatives and educational resources while developing their communications and marketing skills.

The Communications Assistants will support OIA’s Communications Team by informing and executing strategic communications and digital marketing tasks. In addition, the Assistants will help manage an editorial calendar, develop content and collateral, and research trends in social media and digital engagement.  

We are looking for team-players and organized self-starters who can provide creative insights into OIA’s communication strategies. Undergraduate students who want to get more involved with UMD’s community of international and globally-minded students, scholars, faculty and staff, and those with experience in communications, marketing, community engagement, social media management, digital strategy or relevant experience are encouraged to apply. 

 

Responsibilities (to be shared among Assistants)

  • Create, edit, publish, and share engaging content regularly on social media, the web and newsletters

  • Design print and digital collateral for internal and external use

  • Work in Mailchimp to support newsletters and email marketing campaigns

  • News monitoring and reporting

  • Research and track global learning opportunities available to the UMD community

  • Coordination and administrative support for various communications projects including, but not limited to, program announcements, and program/event promotion for Education Abroad, International Student & Scholar Services and Global Classrooms

  • Support the website redesign project for globalmaryland.umd.edu

  • Other marketing and communications support as tasks arise

 

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate student at University of Maryland

  • Good academic standing and maintenance of a minimum 2.5 GPA

  • Creative thinker and problem solver

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, knowledge of AP style a plus

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Ability to take initiative on projects and work independently

  • Be familiar with or able to quickly learn front-end website management

  • A strong communicator, comfortable giving and receiving feedback  

  • Excellent social media management skills, knowledge of Hootsuite a plus

  • Strong project management skills and ability to work in fast-paced environment

  • Experience in graphic design or ability to populate design templates (Canva, Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and/or Illustrator)

  • Experience in video production or editing is a plus

  • Passion for cross-cultural collaboration and global learning
