Student Email and Identification

How do I get a Student ID card?

You get your Student ID in the Mitchell Building. This card is also your library card and shuttle bus pass and Recreation Center pass.

You must register for classes before you can get your ID.

How do I set up my UM email account?

First, find your University Directory ID (Please note: your Directory ID is different from your SID):

  1. Log on to the University Directory.
  2. Click on SEARCH FOR YOUR UNIVERSITY DIRECTORY ENTRY BY UMID/SID & PIN
  3. Enter your social security number (student or faculty ID) and your pin number
  4. Click on SEARCH BY UMID/Pin (This should open up with a page that lists your personal Information [such as address, telephone number and email address) that has your directory ID listed).

If you do not know your Directory ID Password:

  1. Click here or, from the Directory page, click on SET or CHANGE YOUR UNIVERSITY DIRECTORY PASSWORD link.
  2. Fill out the right side of the Directory Password change form.
  3. Type in your SSN in the SID box.
  4. Type in your Ares/Testudo/Mars PIN.
  5. Type in your new directory password (This is what you want your directory password to be. It has to be at least 6 characters long and should contain letters and numbers).
  6. Confirm your new directory password by typing it in again.
  7. Click on CHANGE DIRECTORY PASSWORD.

Next, activate your email account:

  1. Once you know your Directory ID and password, click here.
  2. To activate your new email account, please enter your Directory ID and password in the appropriate boxes.
  3. Click on login.
