Joe Scholten advises and assists faculty, staff, and units on the establishment, renewal, or expansion of global partnerships and maintains UMD's international agreement list in coordination with the Provost’s Office. He also serves as UMD liaison to the Fulbright U.S. Scholar program for faculty and staff, and assists with OIA events and visiting delegations. Prior to joining OIA in 2006, Joe was a visiting faculty member in the departments of Classics and History as well as the Honors program. Before that, he was associate professor of history at Michigan State University and assistant professor of history at Portland State University. He earned an A.B. in history and classical civilization from the University of Michigan, an M.A. and Ph.D. in ancient Mediterranean history and archaeology from the University of California, Berkeley, and is a two-time Fulbright awardee.
