Chat with an ISSS Advisor

Our online chat service makes it easier for you to connect with an ISSS adviser if you have a quick question or need additional direction. 

  • Newly admitted students can reach the pre-arrival team via chat on Mondays-Fridays from 9-11 a.m. ET. 
  • Current students have access to online chat during the regular hours of 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., and extended hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:30-4 p.m. 
  • Scholars, faculty and departments can reach an advisor via chat on Mondays-Fridays from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Chat is designed for short, immigration-related questions and to set up an appointment with an advisor.  Based on the complexity of your question, you may be advised to come in and speak with an advisor directly.  Please note:  

  • At times, chat may be quite busy with an advisor(s) replying to multiple students at once.  Your patience is appreciated.
  • You will need your UMD UID  (10-digit number) or Directory ID to begin a chat session with an ISSS advisor.

To Begin a Chat Session

  1. In the bottom right-hand corner click on "We are Here/Chat with an ISSS Advisor"  (If you don't see the message it is outside of our chat hours, Mon - Fri, 10:30am - 12:30pm EST.)
  2. Enter your name, email address, and UID or directory ID then click "Start the Chat". 

To End Your Chat Session

  1. Click the "X" in the upper right hand corner of the chat window.
  2. Confirm by clicking "Close the Chat".
  3. Provide any optional feedback to ISSS and/or have your chat session emailed to you by clicking the mail icon under the ISSS advisor's name.
